Have you ever wondered how were the relationship between Egypt and Turkey across history?

During ottoman period (1517-1805) Egypt became a province of the ottoman empire after Sultan Selim I defeated the Mamluks. Istanbul ruled formally but the Mamluks retained significant autonomy.

During Muhammed Ali reign in the 19th century, Egypt broke away efectively and challenged the ottoman authority even threatening Istanbul.

During Late Ottoman and WWI era, Ottoman control was weak and fell under the british domination while remaining nominally Ottoman until World War I when the empire collapsed.

Republican turkey and modern Egypt in 1920 till 1950s, relations were limited but generally good as they were shaped by nationalism and post-imperial adjustments.

Cold war Period, the relations were deteriorated since Nasser clashed ideologically with Turkey which was aligned with the West and NATO.

21st century, the relations improved but during post 2013 Turkey opposed Morsi removal and supported the Muslim Brotherhood. In 2020s the relations are reaching a gradual normalization due to regional crisis.

Tayyip Erdogan visited Egypt in February 14,2024 then he went to Ittihadiya Presidential palace. This was the first visit in more than a decade of tensions. Then in october 13 2025. he arrived to Sharm el Sheikh to particpate in Gaza Peace Summit.
