Madbouly reviews proposals for upgradig the area around Cairo citadel and Zabaleen district

On Sunday, Egyptian Prime Minister Madbouly held a meeting to discuss the development projects Cairo citadel district and the Zaballeen district.

He highlighted the importance of these as a part of the cultural and historical heritage of Egypt. The cabinet gave instructions to the officials to study the development plan. He addressed the government efforts to develop the unplanned areas nationwide.

Ibrahim Saber, the governor of Cairo, attended the meeting and he showed astonishing data. It is unbelievable! Aproximately 100,000 residents of Manshiet Nasser work in waste sorting and collection and 15,000 are working in the sector. During the meeting, he presented a number of development proposals during the meeting.

But how was the earlier development plan of these districts during Islamic era?

1. Cairo Citadel District

The citadel was built on a high hill by the famous Muslim Leader Saladin. The main purpose is defence to protect cairo from the potential attacks by the crusaders. This district was intended to be a military and ruling area. The roads surrounding it were built to connect it to the city but the access was controlled.

2. Al Zabaleen District (The trash district)

The suprise is that Al Zabaleen District was not officially planned. People settled there over time due to it’s proximity to the resources and work. Houses were built close together and the streets were narrow and irregular (Probably the Egyptian style of oliver twist story). The site was built for the working class not the rulers or defence.

The government intends to develop the site to give a more dignified life for it’s residents.

If you would like to visit these two sites, we recommend to add khan el Khalili to immerse yourself in the local culture of the city.

Islamic Cairo is a true wonder for those who are fond to islamic history. Egypt is the only place that shined two times during two different regims Ancient Egyptian civilization and Islamic civilization. Its the land of wealth and security. We highly recommend that you make your Christmas and easter in Egypt. Check activities to do in Cairo.
